Implants ...your questions answered

So what exactly is a dental implant?

An implant is used when a natural tooth or teeth are missing. Artificial substitutes to replace the root portion of teeth are put into the bone and gums of the mouth and replacement teeth are then fixed onto these new roots.

Dental implants allow people to smile, speak and chew well, comfortably and with confidence. Gareth Jenkins has been practicing implant surgery since 1986 and has placed well in excess of 5000 implants.

Nonetheless, the technique is unfamiliar to many people. The following information will help put you in the picture. Gareth Jenkins trained in the Branemark Clinic in Sweden and now acts as a trainer for the Nobel Bio Care Company who make the Branemark implants.

Q.

I have some of my own teeth. Can I still have implants?

A.  Yes, it is possible to replace as few as one individual tooth, or as many as a complete set of teeth.

Q.

Are implants successful?

A.  Present day implants based on scientific evidence have shown a success rate of more than 90% in the lower jaw over a 15-year period.

Q.

Will I need an operation?

A.  An operation will be necessary and you will therefore need either a local or general anesthetic. After the operation some patients do experience a little discomfort usually related to stitches which remain in for seven days.

Q.

Do I have one implant for each missing tooth?

A.  No, Unless a single tooth is being replaced. it is usual for five or six implants to be used in the lower jaw to support 10-12 teeth. Where a few teeth are missing, two or three implants are sufficient.
